Caring for Boucle & Velvet Sofas in Bengaluru’s Monsoon

Bengaluru’s weather is famously pleasant, but the monsoon months bring humidity and the dry months bring dust. Upholstered furniture handles both well with a little routine care. Here’s how to keep boucle and velvet sofas looking their best all year.

During the monsoon: fight damp

• Keep the room ventilated on dry days so moisture doesn’t settle into cushions.
• Leave a small gap between the sofa and the wall so air can circulate.
• Don’t put the sofa directly under a window that’s left open during rain.

In the dry months: control dust

Vacuum the sofa every week or two with a soft upholstery brush. Dust is abrasive and dulls fabric over time. Fluff and rotate loose cushions so they wear evenly.

Boucle care

Boucle’s looped texture hides minor marks well. Vacuum gently, never pull at a snagged loop (snip it carefully instead), and blot spills rather than rubbing them into the loops. Manam and Moss are both popular in boucle.

Velvet care

Velvet looks rich because of its pile. Brush it in one direction with a soft brush to keep the sheen even. For spills, blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Mustard shows off velvet’s depth beautifully.

For chai or coffee, blot with a dry cloth, then dab with a cloth dampened in water. Always test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
